" An Eagle's Eye View of 30 Years of Conservation Implementation in Southern California "
Aggressive conservation planning for Southern California was implemented in the early 1990s to develop a biodiversity “future” and allow continued urbanization about 5,000 square miles of valuable real estate. A novel approach involving the state and federal governments hoped to deliver biodiversity conservation and ecological integrity across 5 countries. I will review this process and discuss some of the science that was needed for framing the monitoring and management of the landscape. In particular I will examine our work on the apex avian predator, the golden eagle, which highlights the complexity of this landscape, and the issues involved in this programs success
