Conservation Biology Minor
(Catalog Minors Spring 2007 and later)
The Conservation Biology minor is designed for students who wish to augment their major program of study with courses addressing issues central to the conservation and sustainability of biodiversity and natural ecosystem processes. The minor seeks to provide students with a greater depth of experience and understanding of the role that science can play in developing conservation policy.
Procedures and requirements
- To enter the minor, students must:
- Have completed Life Sciences 1, EE Biology 100 and EE Biology 116 (or Environment 121) with minimum grades of 'C' or better
- Have enough units within your unit maximum to complete your intended program of study (i.e., your university and general education requirements, your major requirements, this minor's requirements and any other program of study you wish to complete)
- Be in good academic standing (i.e., you are not on academic probation, subject to dismissal, etc.)
- All Conservation Biology minor preparation courses must be passed with a letter grade of 'C' or better and
must be completed with an overall GPA of 2.0 (C) or better.
- All courses must be taken for a letter grade.
- The College of Letters and Science requires a total of 60 upper division units for graduation. To graduate, students must earn a minimum global (major) GPA of 2.0 (C) in all courses applied toward the minor and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (C).
- NON-LIFE SCIENCE MAJORS wishing to minor in Conservation Biology should be aware that preparation courses in chemistry, life sciences, mathematics, and physics are requisites to some of the upper division courses accepted for the minor.
- No more than two upper division required courses may be applied toward both this minor and another major or minor program. At least 16 units applied toward the minor must be taken in residence at UCLA. Transfer credit for any of the coursework is subject to departmental approval; consult the undergraduate counselors before enrolling in any courses for the minor.
Conservation Biology Minor Preparation:
- Life Sciences 1
- EE Biol 100 - Introduction to Ecology and Behavior
- EE Biol 116 - Conservation Biology OR Environment 121 - Conservation of Biodiversity
Some of the upper division courses require additional prerequisites, so the student must plan accordingly and carefully. Consult the UCLA General Catalog for more information.
Requirements for the Conservation Biology Minor:
- FOUR to SIX COURSES (totaling at least 19 units) from the following list:
Ecology & Evolutionary Biology 101, 103, 105, 109, 111, 112, 114A, 122, 129, 151A, 154, 176, 180
Please note that EE Biol 176 and 180 are both two unit seminar courses. If either, or both, of these courses are taken for the minor, additional courses (up to a total of six) will be needed to reach the minimum 19 units for this category.
