Ecology, Behavior and Evolution Major

The major in ECOLOGY, BEHAVIOR AND EVOLUTION (EBE) studies the relationships among living beings, their patterns of behavior and the forces that influence their evolution. Students in the EBE major usually pursue careers in field research and academia. This is also a popular major for Pre-Veterinary students.

Students in the EBE major are required to participate in either the Field Biology Quarter (FBQ) or the Marine Biology Quarter (MBQ). The field quarters provide undergraduates with the opportunity to live the life of a biological researcher. Under the guidance of department faculty and graduate assistants, the students design their own research projects, reside and collect data at a field station, conduct experiments to test their hypotheses, and present their work at the end of the quarter. Moreover, some of our undergraduates have had their research published in major peer-reviewed journals.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

UPDATES

SPRING QUARTER 2015
CHANGES TO THE [BIOLOGY/EBE/MARINE BIOLOGY] MAJOR

Chemistry 14CL/30BL is no longer required for the [Biology/EBE/Marine Biology] major. However, some professional schools or graduate programs may still require an additional quarter of chemistry. Please check with the individual programs to determine if you need to complete Chemistry 14CL/30BL.

FALL QUARTER 2010
CHANGES TO THE ECOLOGY, BEHAVIOR AND EVOLUTION MAJOR

Students declaring the Ecology, Behavior and Ecology (EBE) major in FALL QUARTER 2010 OR LATER will no longer be required to complete the following courses:

CHEMISTRY and BIOCHEMISTRY 153A: Biochemistry: Introduction to Structure, Enzymes and Metabolism (4 units)

CHEMISTRY and BIOCHEMISTRY 153L: Biochemical Methods I Lab (4 units).

For students who choose to take Chem 153A and Chem 153L, these courses can be applied to Category 6 of the EBE major - two additional upper division courses (from the approved list).

*NOTE: Chem 153A and/or Chem 153L may still be pre-requisites for professional schools (medical, dental, pharmacy, etc.). It is your responsibility to check with the schools that you plan to apply to determine whether or not Chem 153A and/or Chem 153L are required pre-requisites.

Please note that currently declared students are NOT going to be changed to the new major requirements automatically. A WRITTEN request (via e-mail) must be made to change to the new requirements.

All requests must be made via e-mail and must include your first and last name, your UID and your Degree Expected Term (DET), e.g., Fall 2010, Spring 2011, etc.

Requests should be sent to eebundergrad@lifesci.ucla.edu with the Subject heading "Fall 2010 EBE Major Requirements."

**The first day that requests from current students will be accepted is MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2010 (beginning of Week 1). Requests made prior to this date will be deleted upon receipt.**

DECLARED SUMMER 2010 and FALL 2010 GRADUATES:

Students whose DET is Summer 2010 or earlier CANNOT change to the new requirements.

Students whose DET is FALL 2010, and who wish to change to the Fall 2010 major requirements, must send their written request (via e-mail) to the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Undergraduate Office NO EARLIER THAN MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2010 (beginning of Week 1), and NO LATER THAN MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. (beginning of Week 2).
