Sex is boring, conservative, and reduces heritable variation

Many biologists delight in sexual variation, but this variation is illusory. Meiosis and karyogamy are fundamentally identical to each other and fundamentally identical across all eukaryotes. In attempting to bolster Darwin’s theory of natural selection, Weismann erred by asserting that sex (meiosis and karyogamy) increases variation. Using multiple arguments, we show that sex decreases heritable variation – obviating the cost of sex and showing that evolutionary biologists need to examine whole chromosomes, not just individual genes.
