“When Endocrinology Meets Toxicology: Amphibian Unnatural History”

Amphibian populations are declining worldwide. Although several factorscontribute to these declines, chemical contaminants likely play an important role. My research addresses the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on amphibian growth, development, reproduction, and immune function. A major focus has been on the herbicide atrazine which demasculinizes and feminizes exposed amphibians. My laboratory’s findings challenge several tenets of classical toxicology: Effects occur at low doses and non-monotonic linear dose responses are typically observed. These types of responses are typical of hormones, themselves, however and are to be expected when examining endocrine disrupting chemicals. In addition to assisting in understanding the role of atrazine and other endocrine disrupting chemicals in amphibian declines, collaborative studies are revealing similar effects across vertebrate classes. What’s more, epidemiological studies suggest related effects in humans and in particular raise questions about the roles of endocrine disruptors in racial health disparities. Minorities, who generally suffer greater incidences and poorer outcomes for a number of diseases, are more likely to live in and be employed in areas that increase exposure to chemical contaminants linked to adverse health outcomes.
