"Linking ecological and evolutionary dynamics in a charismatic large vertebrate: the Soay sheep"

Change in population size and in the distribution of heritable phenotypic traits often together; for example, in the well-studied population of Soay sheep living on the St. Kilda archipelago, Scotland, a trend to larger population sizes has gone hand-in-hand with a decrease in body size. In this seminar I will explore why. I start by introducing some new theory before applying it to the Soay sheep dataset to explain why and how these joint changes have occurred. I conclude by discussing how ecological and evolutionary theory can be linked to help predict the consequences of environmental change to the natural world.
