From Fast to Ultra-Fast: The Biological World of Extreme Movement

The fastest movements in the biological world will be explored in the context of their biomechanics, evolutionary diversification, and the trade-offs that accompany extreme kinematic capabilities. The presentation will focus especially on mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) that wield hammers moving with bullet-like accelerations and spears that snag swimming fish. These remarkable biological feats will be considered not only in the context of discovery science, but also for their insights into broader biological, evolutionary, engineering, and physical principles.
