Requirements for the Marine Biology Concentration
- LS 4 (was Biology 108)
- Chemistry 30A (formerly 30 or 132A), 30B (formerly 130A or 132B), 30BL (formerly 130AL or 132BL)
- Chemistry 153A
- EEB (Biology) C109
- One course in marine organismic biology (EEB/Bio 101A, 105, 112, or 137)
- One course in physiology (EEB/Bio 128, 162, 166, 167 or 168)
- One course in ecology, behavior, or evolution (EEB/Bio 100, 120, 122, 129, or 135
- One field quarter consisting of four courses from the Marine Biology Quarter (MBQ) or equivalent field courses given elsewhere (for a 16-unit equivalent, see undergraduate office)
- Two courses in physical, chemical or geological oceanography courses from Anthropology 177, Atmospheric Sciences 102, 143, 144, 147, Chemistry 103, Earth & Space Sciences C107, C109, 153, Geography 100, 101, 103, 190, Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering 103 (strongly recommended), 150A.
>Additional Information
- All courses in the preparation for the major must be passed with a letter grade of C- or better. Students must earn a 2.0 (C) overall average in all courses applied toward the major.
- Two two-unit courses will count as one upper division requirement on the major. A six-unit course will count as one course on the requirements for the major.
- All courses to be applied on the major must be taken for a letter grade.
- The College of Letters and Science requires a total of 72 upper division units for graduation.
>Departmental Honors
An overall GPA of 3.4 and a 3.4 global GPA in the major are required for graduation with honors in Biology. Highest honors in Biology are awarded to majors who have a GPA of 3.6 overall and a 3.6 in the major at graduation and who have satisfactorily completed Biology 190A&B. Students need not apply for departmental honors; all students are reviewed for this following the receipt of final transcripts.
