- EEB C109
- One EEB laboratory course (5L, 101, 110, 153+153L, 157, 158, 181 or 170) or this category may also be satisfied by taking both LS 2 and LS 3 Fall 98 or later.
- One course in marine organismic biology (EEB 101, 105, 112, or 137)
- One course in physiology (EEB 128, 137, 162, M166, 167, 168 or 170)
- One course in ecology, behavior or evolution (EEB 100, 116, C119, 120, 122, 129, C135, or 136)
- One field quarter consisting of four courses from the Marine Biology Quarter (MBQ)
- Two physical, chemical or geological oceanography courses from Atmospheric Sciences 102, 103, 104, 105, and 130 (formerly 102, 143, 144, 147), Chem 103, Earth & Space Sciences 100, 116, 119, 153, Geography 100, 101, 103, 113, 114, 123, 130, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 103 (strongly recommended), 150A
In order to be best prepared for
and to maximize the benefits of the Marine Biology major, we recommend
that students take the more rigorous course in math (31A, 31B, 32A)
and physics (8 or 1 series). In addition, some of the upper division
courses require additional prerequisites, so the student must plan
accordingly and carefully.
Additional Information
- All Life Science Core Curriculum courses must be passed with a letter grade of C- or better and must be completed with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better. If you receive a grade of D or F in two core curriculum courses, either in separate courses or repetition of the same course, you are subject to dismissal from the major. Marine Biology majors must earn a 2.0 (C) overall average in all courses applied toward the major.
- A maximum of four units of graduate work may be applied on the major (if approved).
- Two two-unit courses count as one upper division requirement on the major. A six-unit course counts as one course on the requirements for the major.
- All courses to be applied on the major must be taken for a letter grade.
- The College of Letters and Science requires a total of 60 upper division units for graduation for those entering UCLA Fall 97 and later. For those entering earlier than Fall 97, 72 upper division units are required.
Departmental Honors
An overall GPA of 3.4 and a 3.4 in the global GPA of the major are required for graduation with honors in Marine Biology. Highest honors in Marine Biology are awarded to majors who have global and overall GPA's of 3.6 at graduation and who have satisfactorily completed EEB (Biology) 190A&B. Students need not apply for departmental honors; all students are reviewed for honors following the receipt of final transcripts.
