My research focuses on the systematics and phylogeny of coral crabs belonging to the family Tetraliidae (Crustacea: Brachyura). These obligate symbionts of scleractinian corals defend their host from attacks by the crown-of-thorns seastar (Acanthaster planci). I will produce a monograph on this important family that will include at least four new species that I have recently discovered.

My main interest is studying the factors promoting hummingbird
diversity in South America. Specifically, I study phylogeographic
patterns of hummingbird species in the Andes, paying particular
attention to the role of geography, natural selection, and genetic
drift in differentiating the populations of the Speckled Hummingbird
(Adelomyia melanogenys).
